Bless the Time the Apple was Taken!
(15th century)

Adam lay I-bowndyn, bowndyn in a bond,
fowre žowsand wynter žowt he not to long;
And al was for an appil, an appil žat he tok,
As clerkis fyndyn wretyn in here book.

Ne hadde že appil take ben, že appil taken ben,
ne hadde neuer our lady a ben heuene qwen;
Blyssid be že tyme žat appil take was,
Žer-fore we mown syngyn, 'deo gracias!'
