The Middle English period comprises some 450 years, i.e. from c.1066 to c.1500. This is an enormous span of time - in demographic terms more than fifteen generations. It is very helpful for students of medieval English literature to subdivide the period into shorter and more intelligible eras, such as the reigns of individual kings or dynasties. Moreover, each century usually offers specific features, which allow the student to correlate important events and developments to persons and dates. Pieces of information should be integrated into a simple network providing a clearly arranged structure of the overwhelming amount of names and dates. The pages below open very short and simplified arrangements of the most important names, dates, facts and figures that should be known by heart by every student of medieval English literature.
