Welcome to the Authors'Room. Though the majority of Middle English texts has come down to us anonymously, we know more than a hundred authors by name, among them such well-known poets as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Langland, John Gower, Thomas Hoccleve, John Lydgate, and many more..

For our purpose, we selected Thomas Hoccleve, whose image you see on the left hand side, and John Gower on the right hand side. Gower is a late 14th-century and Hoccleve an early 15th-century author. Both poets lived in the London area, and both saw turbulent events an developments, sucha s the Peasants' Revolt of 1382 or the Lancastrian Revolution of 1399.
