Have you ever longed to…
… take refuge from the wilderness under the roof of Heorot?
… walk the deck of a Viking long ship and
… gather in the village square to listen to travellers' tales of distant places?
Now you can do all this and more. As one of the first universities in Germany, the HHU is about to establish a presence in the 3D virtual world of Second Life.
Together, we will build and embellish a MedievalVillage and explore the educational possibilities offered by this platform. Buildings, objects and multimedia-based information on texts, genres, historical background and persons from the Old and Middle English periods will be freely available to all Second Life visitors world-wide.

The seminar will be based on project-oriented work in a number of teams, allowing each participant to contribute his or her individual strengths – whether research, writing, building, scripting or just generally coming up with exciting new ideas.
Besides curiosity about the new medium, you will need a certain amount of computer literacy and feel comfortable working online and trying out new technologies.
You do not require any previous knowledge of Second Life; we will start together at the beginning, and there are numerous excellent learning resources available in-world.

Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
(Geoffrey Chaucer, Canterbury Tales)

As the number of workstations is limited in the ZIM, no more than 25 students can be admitted to the seminar. Therefore, you have to enrol for this course by personal appointment in one of our office hours or via email.
